Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has said he will consider an offer to face Terence Crawford if the money is right.
The Mexican has previously shown little interest in the fight due to Crawford competing weight classes below him, claiming he would receive little to no credit for beating a smaller man.
The 36-year-old from Omaha has not been deterred, continuing to reiterate his desire to make the move up two divisions from his last outing to challenge Canelo for the unified super-middleweight world titles.
Those belts were most recently defended earlier this month when he faced previously-undefeated top contender Edgar Berlanga. It was a routine win in which Alvarez dropped the challenger on his way to a wide unanimous points victory.
Berlanga was recently asked by Sway for his thoughts on the Crawford match-up. And although he believes Canelo will have the edge in size and weight, he says you can never write off the ‘legend’ Crawford.
“I truly believe that anything can happen in boxing and Terence Crawford is great, he’s a great fighter. The only thing I see that I favour Canelo is his weight and that he’s bigger, that’s the only thing. As far as skillset wise, IQ, I feel like Crawford can match anybody and probably do way better. Crawford is a legend and like I said you can’t count him out.”
Crawford has said that only big money bouts that add to his already history-making legacy matter to him, and some in the sport believe that he could retire should Canelo pursue another fight.
One such option is a rematch with Dmitry Bivol, who beat Canelo in 2022 at light-heavyweight. Bivol faces Artur Beterbiev next month for the undisputed title.
And then there’s David Benavidez, who has been trying to force a fight against Canelo for some years now. For the super-middleweight champ, it seems it will come down to how much money is on the table.
