Jaron Ennis has spent years keen to try and secure a showdown with Terence Crawford.
Until recently, Crawford was the king of the 147lb division after he defeated Errol Spence Jr in their undisputed battle to secure all four welterweight world titles.
There was a contractual rematch between Crawford and Spence, meaning that ‘Bud’ was unable to fulfil his IBF mandatory, which so happened to be against Ennis.
The rematch between ‘Bud’ and Spence didn’t end up happening due to injuries sustained by Spence, and instead Crawford has moved up to 154lbs and since become champion there after defeating Israil Madrimov for WBA super-welterweight title.
Ennis has made two defences of his IBF belt in that time, but there was recent talk that he could also move up in weight to 154lbs, putting a potential fight against Crawford back on the table.
It seems that ‘Bud’ has other ideas though, as he had made it clear that the fight he craves is a clash against current unified super-middleweight champion and fellow pound-for-pound star Canelo Alvarez.
While it may involve stepping up two weight classes, Crawford says he is more than willing to do so, in what would likely be one of the biggest fights in boxing history.
It means that the chances of Ennis getting a fight against Crawford currently look slim, but ‘Boots’ remained respectful when speaking to Fight Hub TV about the prospect of ‘Bud’ facing Canelo.
“It’s a good fight, two good fighters, it’s a good fight.”
Instead, a fight between Ennis and Teofimo Lopez could be on the cards for 2025, and Lopez has revealed how the negotiations are going.
