Jaron Ennis could be set for a major fight as he prepares to begin life in a new weight class.
After making his debut in 2016, ‘Boots’ has spent his career campaigning at welterweight, and in recent years managed to reach the top of the division.
He became IBF champion in 2023 after being upgraded from interim champion when Terence Crawford was stripped of the belt, leading to Ennis making successful defences against David Avanesyan and Karen Chukhadzhian.
‘Boots’ then headed into a unification clash with WBA champion Eimantas Stanionis, where he put in arguably the best performance of his career so far, stopping Stanionis inside six rounds to add the WBA belt to his collection.
He is now set to relinquish those belts and move up in to the super-welterweight division though, and it has been revealed by Saudi chief Turki Alalshikh that plans are in place for him to potentially take on WBC interim champion Vergil Ortiz later this year.
“We are talking now to do a card in November. I am thinking and I hope to have Ortiz vs Boots.”
A fight between Ennis and Ortiz was in talks for earlier this year, but negotiations fell through after ‘Boots’ opted to remain at 147lbs for the unification clash with Stanionis.
Ortiz is regarded as one of the best fighters at 154lbs, having claimed impressive victories over Israil Madrimov and Serhii Bohachuk in his last two outings.
Along with the fight between Ennis and Ortiz, Alalshikh also revealed that a heavyweight battle between Moses Itauma and Martin Bakole could take place on that card, with Itauma first in action in August when he faces Dillian Whyte.
