Only One Man Now Stands In The Way Of Jaron Ennis World Title Shot At 154 After New World Ranking

Former unified welterweight champion Jaron Ennis has been given his new world ranking ahead of his first outing at 154lbs.

The 28-year-old from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is set to make the jump up to super-welterweight at some stage before the end of the year after campaigning at 147lbs since his professional debut back in 2016.

‘Boots’ WBA and IBF unified welterweight champion after defeating Eimantas Stanionis earlier this year, stopping the durable Lithuanian in the sixth round of their showdown at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

He now gears up for the next chapter of his career, setting his sights on becoming a two-weight world champion at the earliest opportunity.

That could come along a lot sooner than was initially expected, after the WBC placed Ennis at number one in their official August rankings, meaning the 28-year-old is now in line for a potential clash with WBC champion Sebastian Fundora. The towering champion has held the belt since March 2024, and claimed a dominant seventh round retirement win over Tim Tszyu during his latest defence in July.

However, Interim Champion Vergil Ortiz Jr stands in the way. Ortiz made the most recent successful defence of his WBC interim strap earlier this year when he defeated Uzbekistan’s former WBA super-welterweight champion Israil Madrimov via unanimous decision at the ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudia Arabia.

Ennis’ promoter Eddie Hearn recently revealed that, as part of a new multi-fight deal, the Philly native has signed to face Ortiz early next year, however the latter says he has not yet received the same offer.
