Former unified welterweight champion Jaron Ennis has sent a scathing message out to a potential future rival as he edges closer to finalising his return to the ring.

The 28-year-old from Philadelphia was last in action on October 11 when he stopped Portugal’s Uisma Lima in the opening round of their clash to capture the vacant WBA ‘interim’ super-welterweight title.

Ennis appears to be on the verge of securing himself a world title shot at 154lbs, as he sets his sights on becoming a two-weight world champion following his success at 147lbs where he previously held the WBA and IBF titles.

It has been speculated that ‘Boots’ could also be in line to face WBC ‘interim’ super-welterweight champion Vergil Ortiz Jr next, with both fighters said to be interested in locking horns next year.

Speaking to K.O. Artist Sports, Ennis claimed he is going to ‘make Ortiz pay’ as he backs himself to prove that he is the ‘best fighter in the world’ with a victory over his rival.

“I said the time is now. We’re in our prime right now. It’s the best fight in boxing and I told him that I’m going to make him pay. The whole team been talking all crazy saying this, I duck this, I duck that. We about to shut everybody up and show the world I’m the best in the world.”

Boots and Ortiz faced-off for the very first time last month, just moments after the latter marked his long-awaited return to the ring with a second round stoppage victory over Erickson Lubin at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
