Former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr could be on the verge of making his long-awaited return to the ring.
The 35-year-old from Long Island, New York has not fought since suffering the first defeat of his professional career to countryman Terence Crawford in July 2023, falling short in his attempt at becoming the undisputed welterweight champion in the process.
Rumours have began to ramp up around a return to the ring for ‘The Truth’, with reports suggesting that the former unified WBC, WBA and IBF welterweight champion will make the move up to super-welterweight for the final stages of his campaign.
One man that has emerged as a potential future opponent for Spence is hard-hitting contender Vergil Ortiz Jr, who currently holds the WBC interim world title at 154lbs.
Speaking to Fight Hype, Ortiz’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya paid homage to ‘The Truth’ before hinting that he would be interested in making a fight between Spence and Ortiz at the AT&T Stadium in Texas.
“First of all, I have to say that I respect Spence so much. When I promoted him I’ve always said that he was like the next Sugar Ray Leonard of our era – clean-cut, good kid, can fight like a motherf****r you know? He’s just amazing.
“I think he still has that opportunity, I think he has a second chance in life, he has to seize it, he has to want it, he has to have that discipline to capture it. Imagine that when Vergil Ortiz was a kid telling me ‘Oscar, I want to fill up the stadium one day’ well I’ll tell you one thing, Vergil Ortiz and Errol Spence at Dallas Cowboys Stadium, man it doesn’t get any better than that.”
Ortiz is set to make his long-awaited return to the ring later this year as he gears up to make the 2nd defence of his WBC interim world title against former world title challenger Erickson Lubin at the Dickies Arena in Forth Worth on Saturday November 8.
