Errol Spence Jr has weighed in with his verdict for a potential fight between old foe Terence Crawford and Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez.
Crawford defeated Spence last year to become the undisputed welterweight champion. The fight, billed by many as a 50/50 contest before the first bell, turned out to be anything but. ‘Bud’ dominated from the get-go, knocking Spence down three times on his way to a ninth round stoppage victory.
Both men announced they would be moving up in weight. Crawford made his 154 debut earlier this month, defeating WBA champion Israil Madrimov via decision to make yet more history and become a four-weight world champion.
Since then the 36-year-old has said a fight against super-middleweight champion Canelo is currently his main motivation in the sport, with Riyadh Season’s Turki Alalshikh believing the Mexican is the only man Crawford will return to the ring for,
In an interview with Fight Hub TV Spence encouraged Crawford to chase greatness and said he’d be backing his former opponent if the fight did materialise.
“it could happen, I mean why not? If Crawford wants to challenge himself to be great then let him try to be great you know, so I’m with it.
I’ll be going for ‘Bud’ if he fights Canelo, I’ll be going for him. I don’t know if he’s going to win or lose but I’ll definitely be going for Crawford. I think if anybody can pull it off he can pull it off.
He’s chasing greatness so why not. Canelo went up to 175 and fought Kovalev and fought the other guy [Bivol] too, so if he can do it, and he started at 147, so if he doing then why can’t Crawford do it.”
Canelo meanwhile is set to defend his three super-middleweight belts against Edger Berlanga in Las Vegas on September 14.
