Former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr could be on the verge of finalising his long-awaited comeback to the sport.

The 35-year-old from Long Island has not fought since he suffered the first defeat of his professional career to the now retired pound-for-pound star Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford in July of 2023.

Spence had been in line to make a return to action back in the early stages of 2025 but a planned showdown with WBC super-welterweight champion Sebastian Fundora did not come to fruition.

Instead, ‘The Truth’ is now expected to make a comeback this year with multiple reports suggesting that the former unified welterweight champion is in line to face unbeaten American star Vergil Ortiz Jr.

Speaking on social media, Ortiz’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya hinted at the possibility of Spence facing Ortiz at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Texas, although ‘The Golden Boy’ refused to rule out a potential clash with Fundora.

“Vergil can fight two or three different guys in mega fights – he’s got options. Imagine him with Errol Spence at Dallas Cowboys Stadium, or Sebastian Fundora in a mega fight in Vegas.

“‘Boots’ is part of the plan but it doesn’t have to be next. But Eddie, since you’re so desperate to make this fight, then let’s do this: 60-40 [purse split] for Vergil and 5% to the winner, because I’m generous. And I’m not moving off those numbers.”

Unbeaten star Ortiz looked set for a showdown with fellow undefeated fighter Jaron Ennis in early 2026, but with that fight still yet to be finalised, fans have began to speculate that a clash against Spence could happen instead.

Ortiz has previously stated that a showdown with Spence would be somewhat of a ‘dream fight’ for him, having cited ‘The Truth’ as one fighter he would love to share the ring with should the opportunity present itself to him.
