Errol Spence Jr has been inactive since losing an undisputed welterweight world title bout against Terence Crawford.
Though the years away from the sport, paired with serious previous injuries, lead many to believe that he would hang up the gloves, reports and rumours of a comeback continue to surface.
One match-up in particular that seemed closer than others was a shot at WBC Super Welterweight World Champion Sebastian Fundora. The pair were in advanced talks to face off but negotiations broke off and Fundora has since beaten Chordale Booker and Tim Tszyu in a rematch.
Despite nothing materialising on the first attempt, ‘The Towering Inferno’ told Boxing Scene that he is still interested in making it happen.
“Of course I want that fight. It’s a big fight, it’s a big, big, fight, but of course it didn’t happen, so you just have to keep a good mindset and go, whoever it is we fight, we train 100 per cent for them … You know what, I hope [it happens] – why not? It’s a great fight. I think he’s a great fighter but we’ll see what happens in the future.”
Fundora, though ‘willing to face anybody,’ has had his latest plans spoiled due to circumstances out of his control. He was due to welcome Keith Thurman back to the big time with a title opportunity on October 25, but a hand injury for the champion forced a postponement. The fight is now expected to land on a Manny Pacquiao card in January.
As for Spence, he has also been linked with Jermell Charlo.
