Errol Spence Jr fell short in a historic undisputed welterweight championship showdown against Terence Crawford almost two years ago.
The 34-year-old from Long Island, New York dared to be great against his long-term 147lb rival in July 2023, as he looked to become the first undisputed welterweight champion of the ‘four belt era’.
The dominance of Crawford proved to be the difference on the night, taking control from the opening bell to eventually force a stoppage in the ninth round, putting an end to a rivalry that began back in 2018. A historic victory for ‘Bud’, who had already won the undisputed championship at super lightweight 6 years prior.
Over the last few months, it has been heavily speculated that the 37-year-old from Omaha is negotiating a fight with unified super middleweight champion and pound-for-pound star, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
In the wake of this news, Spence spoke to FightHub TV about the potential showdown, and is confident that his former foe has what it takes to move up a further two weight divisions to compete with the much larger Canelo.
“It could happen, I mean why not? If Crawford wants to challenge himself to be great then let him try to be great you know, so I’m with it.
I’ll be going for ‘Bud’ if he fights Canelo, I’ll be going for him. I don’t know if he’s going to win or lose but I’ll definitely be going for Crawford. I think if anybody can pull it off he can pull it off.
He’s chasing greatness so why not? Canelo went up to 175 and fought Kovalev and fought the other guy [Bivol] too, so if he can do it, and he started at 147, so if he doing then why can’t Crawford do it.”
Turki Alalshikh is reportedly leading the negotiations between the pound-for-pound superstars, as he hopes to get the fight over the line in the coming months.
