Errol Spence Jr has been out of the ring since a bruising stoppage loss to Terence Crawford back in 2023.

The 35-year-old former WBA, WBC and IBF World Champion had dominated the welterweight ranks alongside Crawford before the pair met in a genuine American super fight. Spence lost convincingly, touching the canvas three times before being stopped.

Despite the loss and its one-sided nature – as well as serious injuries in the past – many fans would like to see Spence fight on. Should he do so, he has made it clear it would be one division up at 154 pounds. One of the main players at that weight class is 23-0 knockout artist Vergil Ortiz Jr.

Speaking to Fight Hype after Ortiz’s latest win over Israil Madrimov, promoter Oscar De La Hoya said that he was targeting a Dallas homecoming bout for his charge, and an ideal opponent would be Spence.

“I’m thinking about doing a homecoming party for him in Dallas and fight a top 10 guy. Then go after Fundora and then go after Crawford after he comes back down to 154 after he fights Canelo at 168.

“There’s a lot of options out there for Vergil. I’m excited. Imagine if we can put together a Vergil-Spence fight at Dallas Stadium at the Cowboys Stadium. That would sell out the place. I think that’s something to consider as well. There’s some good options for Vergil.”

The fight would certainly be the biggest spectacle of Vergil’s campaign, but a tough ask for Spence who would be faced with debuting in a new weight class after over two years of inactivity. The former unified welterweight champion has so far remained tight-lipped on a comeback.

Ortiz also has his sights set on facing Jaron Ennis, another former welterweight champion making the move up.
