A retired world champion has urged Errol Spence Jr to avoid one man if he should consider a comeback to the sport.

Spence has been rumoured to be keen on making his long-awaited return to the ring at some stage this year, two years on from suffering the first defeat of his career to Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford. However, many feel that he has quietly retired and won’t be seen inside the ropes again.

‘The Truth’ was stopped in the ninth round of his showdown with countryman Crawford in July of 2023, falling short in his attempt at becoming the undisputed world welterweight champion and suffering his first defeat in the process.

Speaking on his Youtube channel, two-weight world champion Timothy Bradley Jr urged Spence to avoid facing unbeaten super-welterweight contender Vergil Ortiz Jr if he decides to return – something Bradley thinks is a bad idea in general.

“Seriously, you [Spence] probably feeling good, walking around, training and stuff, you know, you doing what you supposed to do, taking care of yourself and right, just keep it that way because you get in the ring with Vergil Ortiz man, that ain’t good man.

“I know you was the big fish, you ain’t no longer the big fish bro, you ain’t the big fish no more, you might be one of them little guppies or something man, you ain’t no big fish no more man. If you gonna come back you better do it right, you better get yourself a tune up, because if you come back and you fight Vergil Ortiz man, for sure, I’m putting money on Vergil Ortiz, he gonna stop you, he gonna stop you Spence I promise you.”

Ortiz has emerged as one of the sport’s brightest prospects over the last 18 months. The 27-year-old from Texas currently reigns as the WBC interim super-welterweight champion, making the most recent defence of his crown against Israil Madrimov on February 22.

Whilst his promoter Oscar De La Hoya has talked up a Spence fight, Ortiz is much more likely to face a solid contender this year before looking to make a highly sought after clash with Jaron Ennis, who has apparently already signed his side of the deal.
