Chris Eubank Sr has been reflecting on a lucky result back in the middle of his career.
Eubank won his first world title in 1990 when he beat Nigel Benn for the WBO middleweight strap, and he defended it against the likes of Michael Watson before moving up and wining the WBO super-middleweight belt against the same man.
He then defended that against Benn, Herny Wharton and Ray Close amongst others before finally losing to Steve Collins in 1995.
However, speaking on Call Chris Eubank, Sr admitted that it was a fight in 1994 against Dan Schommer that he thinks he should have lost.
“I fought him in South Africa. If you watch this fight, this man clearly beats me, outboxes me, and they give me the decision.”
He went on to explain his mindset after first seeing Schommer at the press conference and explained how that put him on the back foot.
“I said to Barry [Hearn] this is going to be embarrassing, he looks like a pizza boy, he’s got a fat stomach. That was my perception. That’s how you get beat, by underestimating your opponent. This guy outboxed me like it was embarrassing. He hit and he moved and he outboxed me and they robbed him.”
Eubank was given a unanimous points decision win that night, which allowed him to retain his belt and fight on for another four years. His career ended after a loss to Joe Calzaghe and two more against Carl Thompson to leave him with a record of 52 fights and 45 wins.
