Chris Eubank Sr’s career helped to define a famous period in British boxing history during the 1980s and 1990s.
The London-born fighter became one of the country’s most famous sporting personalities thanks to his gentlemanly style out of the ring, but ferocity in it.
He competed as a professional from 1985 to 1998, and in that time he ruled for a year as WBO middleweight champion and then for four years as the WBO super-middleweight king after moving up a division.
He is considered one of the best British super-middleweights of all time and had famous battles with the likes of Michael Watson, Nigel Benn and Steve Collins, who beat him twice on points.
Towards the end of his career, he also became a victim of the rising star that was Joe Calzaghe, and ended his time in the ring with two back-to-back fights with Carl Thompson at junior-heavyweight for the WBO title.
Speaking on his Call Chris Eubank YouTube channel, Eubank reflected that those final two fights of his career were the hardest.
“I fought a fellow in my last two fights, Carl ‘The Cat’ Thompson. These two fights were fights in which I was to be assassinated. What I mean by that is being punched to pieces where I wouldn’t or shouldn’t be able to speak.”
Eubank never returned to the ring after those losses, including one which saw him stopped for the first time in his 52-fight career, while Thompson went on to become the first man to beat David Haye before retiring in November 2005.
