Chris Eubank Sr had a standout boxing career across the late 1980s and 1990s.
The London-born fighter competed 52 times in all and won 45 of them, 23 coming by knockout along with five losses and two draws.
His first full world title came in 1990 when he beat Nigel Benn by TKO and defended that title three times, including with a win over Michael Watson, before then moving up to super-middleweight for a Watson rematch, which he also won.
He retained the WBO super-middleweight title with further wins over the likes of Sam Storey and Ray Close, but Steve Collins proved his undoing and beat him in 1995 and then again later the same year. Eubank’s final fights were against Joe Calzaghe and Carl Thompson twice, all three of which he lost before retiring in 1998.
Speaking on his own YouTube channel, Call Chris Eubank, he was asked how much he earned in his most lucrative fight.
“£850,000 for fighting Nigel Benn in the second fight. It may not seem like a great deal of money, but I was never fighting for money. I was fighting for the hearts of the people. My wealth was getting my face and name in the television and the newspapers, being on TV three times a week, showing who I really am.”
The fight ended in a draw and the final scores were 115–113 Eubank, 114–113 Benn and 114–114, which saw Eubank retain his belt. The fee for the contest seems remarkably low given that his son, Chris Eubank Jr, reportedly earned several million for his own win over Conor Benn back in April.
