The Chris Eubank Jr. vs Conor Benn saga continues to have many twists and turns.
The two long-time rivals finally met at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London in April, with Eubank Jr claiming bragging rights with a unanimous decision victory.
It was expected that the two men would then rematch in September, but there has now been doubt cast upon it, with Benn and his team claiming that Eubank has gone quiet and that a deadline has been placed upon him to sign the contract.
Eubank’s manager Napper Amoakoh has attempted to play down those worries, after telling Boxing Scene that his man only wants the Benn fight next.
“He’s not trying to do no other fight. Conor Benn’s a fight he wants. He wants to do part two, just like his dad and Conor’s dad did and nothing has changed.
“Eubank Jr is all in on it. There’s no other fight that he wants. In terms of how quick that the lawyers are going to go over the small things in the contract and whatnot, we don’t know. Ideally, ASAP.”
Despite easing those concerns, Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn revealed to Talksport that they have been looking at other options for Benn, with WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson a potential target.
“There has been a lot of interest [from Shakur]. They were on the Ariel Helwani Show.
“Shakur is a lightweight; it would be like Conor moving up two divisions like he did [against Eubank Jr].
“Pound-for-pound, Shakur is a phenomenal fighter, but up at welterweight, Conor feels like he would give him a run for his money.
“So if we don’t get Eubank and he chooses to duck out of the fight, then why not Shakur Stevenson later in the year?”
With the proposed September date for Eubank Jr and Benn just two months away, a final decision regarding whether the bout will indeed go ahead is expected soon.
