Evander Holyfield Brands Current Fighter ‘Pernell Whitaker With Power’: “I Love To Watch Him”

Hall of Famer Evander Holyfield will always be considered a boxing legend for the rare things he achieved in the ring.

Holyfield remains the only four-time world heavyweight champion having also been a bronze medalist in the light heavyweight division at the 1984 Olympics. The American great famously cleaned out the cruiserweight division in the late 80s to became undisputed before then moving up. Despite being a smaller man and having to bulk up considerably, he worked his way to the top and won all major belts in the banner division by the late nineties.

That feat was only recently matched in those weight classes by the great Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk back in May, while Terence Crawford and Naoya Inoue have been twice undisputed in other divisions.

Along the way, Holyfield had some notorious battles with the likes of Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson, George Foreman, Larry Holmes and Riddick Bowe, who handed him his first professional loss.

Speaking to ES News, Holyfield was asked which contemporary fighters he likes watching and went with Baltimore’s lightweight world title holder Gervonta Davis because, like him, he knows to never quit.

“Tank is different. He a Pernell Whitaker with power. And he’s got good defence, he takes a pretty good shot too.”

“Tank is one of [my favourite fighters to watch]. These guys that fight, good fighters, they know the game. The game is not quit. Everything ain’t gonna go your way, you ain’t gonna feel good all the time, but you got to perform. The fact of the matter is it’s more than just you, you got to care about the people who watch the fight as well.”

Speaking recently, Holyfield gave Usyk his flowers and thought he would be a difficult modern-day fighter to beat.

As for ‘Tank’ Davis, he remains undefeated in 30 with just two opponents managing to take him the distance. Following a statement knockout win over Frank Martin in June, he is currently on the lookout for his next opponent.
