A former world champion has backed Jake Paul to secure a showdown with former UFC world champion Conor McGregor next.

Paul suffered the second defeat of his professional career last month when he was stopped in the 6th round of his clash with two-time world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in Miami, Florida.

The 29-year-old from Cleveland is set for an extended period of recovery after he suffered a double broken jaw during his bout against Joshua, although he is likely to make a return before the end of the year.

Whilst Paul has expressed an interest in returning to cruiserweight and pushing towards securing himself a world title shot, former WBA super-middleweight champion George Groves believes ‘The Problem Child’ should be targeting a clash with Conor McGregor instead.

In an interview with Bet Victor, Groves shared his thoughts on a potential match-up between Paul and McGregor as he backs the former Youtube star to defeat the two-weight UFC champion in a shock claim.

“Conor McGregor is the biggest name in mixed martial arts and very limited in his boxing ability. I think that’ll be the route Paul will go down. Y

“ou could get a ranking, you can get a WBC interim belt, you can get anything you want in boxing if you create and generate money, but fighting for the USA Cruiserweight Championship, no one cares. He needs to fight famous people. Conor McGregor would really sells.

“I reckon Jake Paul beats Conor McGregor. Nothing can scare him anymore. He’s fought Anthony Joshua, he’s climbed Everest without a harness. Nothing can scare him. Conor McGregor certainly won’t scare him. The trash talk will be exceptional. He might even get under Conor McGregor’s skin. It could be a boxing match for the first three rounds, then a wrestling match, and then just bare knuckle for the last three, I make Jake Paul the favourite.”

McGregor made the transition into professional boxing back in 2017 although he was stopped in the 10th round of his monumental crossover bout with former pound-for-pound great Floyd Mayweather Jr in Las Vegas.
