Jake Paul faced Mike Tyson over eight two-minute rounds this month, beating the 58-year-old former heavyweight world champion by clear unanimous decision.
The 27-year-old content creator turned fighter was criticised for the matchmaking, which was under his MVP promotional banner, due to the potential risks posed to Tyson.
‘Iron’ Mike left the ring safely, though the action left a lot to be desired. The likes of Oscar De La Hoya and Carl Froch have condemned the main event.
Shannon Briggs, a former heavyweight world champion, has also given his verdict. Speaking on Instagram, Briggs said he ‘feels responsible’ for the rise of Jake and his brother Logan in the sport having been a part of their first training camps.
“I feel responsible. That’s why Mike was mad at me when we did the slap boxing thing, he was like ‘you trained Jake and Logan Paul.’ And I didn’t understand at first, but YouTube boxing… I feel responsible. I started it, not I gotta end it. I gotta hurt one of them. All of them.
Shannon ‘The Cannon’ – who finished 37 of his 68 fights in the first round – has long discussed a comeback after last fighting in 2016.
Known for his formidable punching power and fondness of a fire fight, the 52-year-old won the WBO Heavyweight World Title against Siarhei Liakhovich in 2006 and lost it in his first defence one year later against Sultan Ibragimov. He later challenged for the WBC belt against Vitali Klitschko but was beaten over the distance.
Briggs has likely missed out on his shot at Paul, who will now be moving on from boxing veterans to his next money-spinning event. He remains adamant that he will win a legitimate world title, though seems reluctant to take the opportunities many titlists offered him after the Tyson win.
