Deontay Wilder has been called out by a former world heavyweight champion.
Wilder was once the long-reigning WBC heavyweight champion, and was seen as the biggest puncher in boxing after knocking out the likes of Luis Ortiz, Bermane Stiverne and Dominic Breazeale.
He then took part in a memorable trilogy with Tyson Fury, with the first fight ending in a controversial draw before ‘The Gypsy King’ then won the next two fights by stoppage.
Wilder’s career has been dealt major blows since then, suffering a defeat on points to Joseph Parker, before he was then knocked out by Zhilei Zhang.
He has been linked to a return over the past few months, but nothing is yet to materialise, and now a ex-world champion has called out ‘The Bronze Bomber’ for a showdown.
That man is Shannon Briggs, the former WBO and lineal heavyweight champion, who told Fight Hub TV he would be willing to take on Wilder in his hometown.
“I would like to fight him, I think it would be a great fight in Alabama when he comes back. I never really retired, they just won’t fight me. I’m going to fight in March so if he wants to go, we can go.”
Briggs has won 60 of his 68 professional fights, but is now 53-years-old and hasn’t been in the ring since way back in 2016.
It means a fight between Wilder and Briggs is unlikely, but another option has come up for ‘The Bronze Bomber’ after it was revealed he could challenge for a title.
