It seems like every boxer past and present has called out Jake Paul and promised to knock him out.
Paul has become a hugely popular yet divisive figure in the sport since he switched over from YouTube. He has had just 12 fights, winning 11 and losing once to Tommy Fury.
Most of his opponents have been former MMA stars, including the likes of Nate Diaz and Tyron Woodley, though in November he took on former world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson. The one-sided contest ended in a points victory for Paul who has since called out the likes of Canelo Alvarez.
One of many in boxing who was not happy with the controversial Tyson bout is former world champion and boxing legend James Toney, as he told the Wisenuts Podcast.
“F**k Jake Paul he sucks, he’s garbage, he’s destroying the sport of boxing, period. I ain’t playing, I take my craft serious. I love boxing, boxing’s my world. I love Mike but Mike disrespect the sport. Paul disrespect the sport by doing what they did.”
He was asked why it was so disrespectful and leaned into the theories supported by the likes of Carl Froch and Oscar De La Hoya that the fight was ‘rigged’.
“Because [Tyson’s] getting paid extra money, Paul is having a celebrity thing. I’m sorry, it’s bulls**t. Jake Paul, y’all could beat this guy. He’s garbage. He’s amateur.”
Toney was then asked if he would fight Paul for the same financial reward and said he would but only if it was a real fight, again referencing accusations that the bout with Tyson was scripted.
“Minus the bulls**t, ‘you can’t knock me out please and all that,’ minus the bulls**t, we can fight a real fight, we’ll fight and I’ll knock him out. I’m not ruining my name for money. I worked hard for my legacy to be what it is.
“Jake get the balls, get the courage, come and see James Toney. Jake you’s a sissy, you ain’t got no balls, no nuts. My legacy means the world to me, I’m the best fighter period. Jake Paul is playing, he playing Russian Roulette. And one of these days the bullet will be in the chamber. It might be me?”
