Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford could collide in 2025.
The fight has been talked about over the past year but is still yet to materialise, but with both men still searching for opponents next year, it once again looks like it could be on the table.
Canelo was last in action in September when he defended his unified super-middleweight titles against Edgar Berlanga, while Crawford’s most recent outing was in August when he stepped up to 154lbs to defeat Israil Madrimov and become WBA super-welterweight champion.
There still remains two weight divisions and 14lbs between the two men, but it wouldn’t be the first time that a fighter has made a big jump up in weight to face Canelo.
One man who did that was Amir Khan, who after last competing at welterweight, moved up for a WBC middleweight title fight with Canelo, although the fight was made at a 155lb catchweight.
Khan suffered a sixth round stoppage loss, but would go on to challenge for world honours once more in his career, when he met Crawford in April 2019.
Crawford won by sixth round stoppage, and he remains the only man to take on both Canelo and Crawford. With that in mind, he has given his prediction to BoxNation about how a fight between his two former foes would go.
“Canelo is a beast man. I fought both of those guys and I feel that size always wins. Having weight divisions, there’s a purpose behind that. Terence is special don’t get me wrong, but then there’s getting hit by a guy like Canelo.
“What a fight that would be though. I’ll favour for my boy Terence and I want him to win that fight, but it would be hard. Does he need that fight? No I don’t think he needs it. He has done so well in his career and beaten everyone.
“He’s untouchable and one of the best out there pound-for-pound, but if it’s a big pay day, then I know why it’ll be made. Why would Terence take a risky fight for less money when he can take a seriously hard fight for serious money.
“We never want to see fighters get hurt, but he is a special fighter. If that fight happens it’s hard to call who would win, but I would be in Terence’s corner.”
With rumours surrounding the fight continuing to ramp up, Canelo needed just four words to respond to the latest offer.
