Gervonta Davis has a former world champion now chasing him for a fight.
Davis was set to return to the ring in December in a defence of his WBA lightweight title against Lamont Roach, but the fight has been postponed with no new date currently set.
It is expected that it will now take place in early 2025, with ‘Tank’ looking to extend his current undefeated record of 30-0, with 28 of his wins coming by knockout.
If Davis is successful, the possibilities are endless for who he could potentially face next, with WBC champion Shakur Stevenson the top option in the eyes of fans.
Another fighter has now thrown his hat into the ring, and that is former WBC featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr. He held the belt for nearly seven years from 2015, making five successful defences, before losing to Mark Magsayo in January 2022.
Russell Jr hasn’t fought since that loss, but has told Fighthype that he would be open to returning at lightweight and facing ‘Tank.’
“I would like to come back at 135. I would love a fight with Tank.”
In another recent interview with The Boxing Source, Russell, 36, said he believes the knockout artist from Baltimore has been kept away from him in the past.
“It’s never been personal or anything like that. I just think the sport it’s been too small for both of us to co-exist and not at least come together to see what’d happen. For some weird reason he strayed away from it – him or his team.”
Russell Jr also revealed he would like to rematch Lomachenko, having lost to him by majority decision for the WBO featherweight back in 2014.
“I want my lick back with Lomachenko. I definitely want that one. And then wherever the chips lay at that point, whatever the fans say they want, that’s what will happen.”
As for Davis, he has been recently criticised by Tim Bradley, who claims that ‘Tank’ is essentially only a ’30-year-old prospect’ due to a lack of top-leve fights.
