Canelo Alvarez is being targeted for a ‘double’ undisputed championship fight against a long-term rival.

The 34-year-old from Mexico currently holds the unified WBC, WBA and WBO super middleweight titles, having been stripped of his IBF crown last year. However, he has a chance to get his undisputed status back when he challenges William Scull this May for his IBF title.

In a revelation made by reigning WBC ‘interim’ light heavyweight champion David Benavidez, the 28-year-old has outlined his plans to capture the undisputed championship at 175lbs which he feels would finally pave the way for a showdown with Canelo.

In an interview with ALL THE SMOKE FIGHT, Benavidez – who has long chased a fight with Canelo – spoke about the route he intends to take towards a bout against the Mexican superstar, where he discusses a potential ‘double’ undisputed showdown.

“My plan is right now, beating David Morrell, winning the undisputed titles, and in that way I can entice a fight with Canelo.

Maybe we can do a catchweight 172lbs, I don’t know if they’d allow it but I’m willing to do that for both the titles [at 168lbs and 175lbs], when was the last time that was ever done?”.

‘The Monster’ completed the first part of his plan with a win over David Morrell last time out. That victory puts him first in line for a shot at the titles at 175. All four belts in the division currently belong to Dmitry Bivol after the Russian defeated Artur Beterbiev in their rematch on February 22.

As for Canelo, after he faces Scull he will take on Terence Crawford this September in Las Vegas.
