The talk about a potential fight between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and David Benavidez refuses to go away.
Benavidez is a former two-time super-middleweight champion and Canelo is the current four-belt king. He’s defended his titles against the likes of John Ryder, Jermell Charlo and, last time out, Jaime Munguia across 12 rounds.
Benavidez has long been chasing the Mexican pound-for-pound great but hasn’t yet been able to lure him into the ring.
Instead, he recently moved up to light-heavyweight and in his first fight in the division he cruised to a 12-round unanimous points win over Oleksandr Gvozdyk. With that win, he claimed a WBC interim world title which means he could stay at the weight and become a mandatory challenge to the winner of the much anticipated undisputed fight between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol later this year.
Bivol is only one two men to have ever beaten Canelo, with Floyd Mayweather being the other, and in an interview with FightHubTV told Benavidez to move on from the fight.
“I don’t know what is going on between him and Canelo now. He knows something, this is why he moved up. He’s a big guy. It’s the decision of his team and I respect it.
Maybe [Canelo] is not interested, why should [Benavidez] wait? Of course, he needs to move forward. Guys shouldn’t wait for anybody too long, make your own way and move forward.”
