Heavyweights can typically fight on longer than most, a famous example being the late, great George Foreman, who returned to the sport after a decade-long retirement to ultimately regain the heavyweight championship at age 45 against Michael Moorer,
Mike Tyson’s return last year was less of a fairytale than Foreman’s, stepping through the ropes almost 20 years after his final pro bout for an underwhelming eight-rounder against Jake Paul. Whilst extremely financially successful, the fight showed the 58-year-old’s extreme limitations.
One man who is set to join him at the same venue – perhaps even against him – is big-punching Shannon Briggs, 53. The former WBO Champion scored 37 first round knockouts in his campaign and boasts wins over George Foreman, though controversial, in ‘Big’ Georges final fight and Siarhei Liakhovich. He was stopped by Lennox Lewis in 1998 and lost a wide decision to Vitali Klitschko in 2010.
Having long teased a comeback, Briggs said of the July 1 return, first reported by World Boxing News, that he was ‘more dangerous than ever.’
“I’ve been out of the ring, but I never stopped being a fighter. I’m coming back stronger, faster, and more dangerous than ever. This isn’t just a fight—it’s a movement. LET’S GO CHAMP!”
More news on the fight, especially whether or not it will actually go ahead, is expected soon.
