Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez cruised to victory against a tough and game Edgar Berlanga in Las Vegas this weekend.
Canelo scored a knockdown in the third round and out-landed the Puerto Rican in every round but one to win a unanimous decision on the scorecards.
Berlanga gave a good account of himself, particularly in recovery from the left hook which cause him to hit the canvas. He fought until the end and put on a good show for the fans.
With the win, Canelo keeps ahold of his WBO, WBA and WBC super-middleweight world titles and moves ahead into what will be his 67th fight next May – who fills the opposite corner remains to be seen, but he certainly isn’t short of options.
Here are some fighter reactions to action…
Canelo
“I did good. Now what they gonna say? I tried younger fighters, they always say I fought older fighters. They always talk. I’m the best fighter in the world … It could’ve been [over in the third] but Eddie slows me down and it works. I put on a great show for my people.
He said he respects me so much he feels bad the way he acted. He did good … I got a little angry. I’m Mexican, man.
The victory means a lot. I feel great, I feel grateful. It’s an honour for me to represent my country on this day. Mexican Independence. I feel proud about it. Some people say that you don’t love me but guess what? You are here to support me. Viva Mexico, Cabrones!”
Berlanga
“We did a big performance, man. I’m upset cause I’m a winner but I fought a legend tonight and hopefully this is the mark of me becoming a future legend representing Puerto Rico. I was in the fight. I took his best shot in the third round, got fropped, came back, so I said I can hold these punches and return it.
I could’ve did a lot more but I was in there with a legend, man, so hats off to him. I was telling him that he’s my idol since I was a kid. I always looked up to him. I felt bad cause we had to give bad blood, but I looked up to him. I watched him growing up when I was an amateur. I just want to thank him for the opportunity.”

Sergio Mora
No shame in that loss for Berlanga. He held his own against a Mexican hero! Like when Canelo fell short & was outclassed by the great Mayweather, Berlanga can hopefully grow from this fight and become special one day himself! #CaneloBerlanga
