Floyd Mayweather‘s career involved a few close fights.
Mayweather retired with a perfect 50-0 record, claiming world titles in five divisions from super-featherweight to super-welterweight, but there were some bouts that fans feel could have gone the other way.
One of them came back in 2002 when he defeated Jose Luis Castillo by unanimous decision, although a number of boxing figures have revealed they felt the Mexican should have got the verdict.
Another close contest occurred when Mayweather defeated Oscar De La Hoya by split decision in 2007, the only time that Mayweather has ever had an official scorecard given to his opponent throughout those 50 fights.
One man that understandably knew both fighters very well was Floyd Mayweather Sr, who had trained De La Hoya between 2001 and 2006 but wasn’t in the corner for due to issues over financial demands.
Instead he was involved in the HBO broadcast, and after the fight he revealed he scored the fight against his son and in favour of De La Hoya.
“I’m just gonna be honest with you, man. If you want to call fights by scoring, points system, who’s throwing more punches, you had to give it to Oscar. If you’re just going on a guy hitting a guy with single shots, you have to give it to my son.
“My son had good defence, he caught a lot of punches with his shoulder and his arm, but it’s still about a guy throwing punches. If he touches you, he’s scoring … I thought the fight was a close fight, it’s just where the point system goes. If you look at the point system, who’s touching who the most … You’re gonna have to give it to Oscar if you’re going by point system.”
De La Hoya even claims that Sr came straight up to him after the fight and told him he had won.
Mayweather’s father came straight at ma and he goes ‘Oscar, you beat my son’.
Mayweather Sr and Jr have had a strained relationship over the years, and the pair had another falling out in the build-up to the De La Hoya fight, with some cynics believing that could be a reason in Sr publicly revealing he scored the bout against his son.
