Floyd Mayweather was once a mentor to Gervonta Davis but the relationship has fallen off a cliff and continues to tumble.
The 50-0 fighting legend turned his hand to promoting later in his career and, for some time, his marquee star was Baltimore’s ‘Tank’ Davis.
Over the years the partnership has been a confusing one, with Davis often announcing splits before being pictured with ‘Money’ Mayweather in the ring after his fights. There’s little doubt now though that things are at an all-time low, with social media digs back and forth a regular occurrence.
Davis makes the first defence of his WBA Lightweight World title this weekend against undefeated Frank Martin, his first outing since a statement win over Ryan Garcia early last year.
Something else making headlines in the sport this week is Mayweather Promotions split from CEO Leonard Ellerbe and the hiring of previous Golden Boy promoter Richard Schaefer.
‘Tank’ took to social media to react to the news, saying “if you sign with this fraud he will f**k up your career, he is not a good businessman at all.”
Mayweather sent a veiled response by posting the fight poster for Davis-Martin with the addition of a ‘cancelled’ graphic, leading to some fan speculation. The Hall of Famer then advertised the UFC fight card this weekend, which will be on at the same time as the PBC-promoted fight night. Davis then called Floyd ‘a bitter b***h.’
This all takes place before his weigh-in for the Martin fight, one that some are saying could be the toughest test of his career. For ‘Tank’s money, he will knock the challenger out in round eight or nine.
