A solid chin can get a boxer a long way in the sport.
There are many examples of fighters who have seemingly been impervious to almost all shots and have been able to take inhuman amounts of punishment without going down in the ring.
Examples include the famous granite chin of Carl Froch who could walk through fire and come out the other side still swinging, while Joe Joyce was also thought to be immovable until he came up against Zhilei Zhang who found a way through and managed to twice knock him out last year.
Multi-weight world champion Floyd Mayweather was never put down in the professional ring but rather than relying on his toughness, it was his famous slick defence and shoulder roll that kept him out of trouble for all 50 of his winning bouts.
Speaking to MailSportBoxing, Mayweather was asked who had the best chin in the sport and he went with a Samoan-New Zealand former heavyweight David Tua.
Tua was also known for his punching power and considerable left hook along with his punch resistance. He picked up 16 wins by knockout in the first round, which included those over world heavyweight champions John Ruiz and Michael Moorer. He himself was never stopped and his biggest night came when he challenged Lennox Lewis for the unified world heavyweight title in 2000.
Mayweather remains a giant of the sport several years after retiring undefeated and having beaten greats like Oscar De La Hoya, Manny Pacquiao, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Miguel Cotto. He continues to take part in exhibitions and next time out he rematches John Gotti III after the first contest ended in a brawl.
