Floyd Mayweather Jr has weighed in on the credentials of pound-for-pound stars Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez.

After months of speculation, it was confirmed earlier this year that Canelo will defend his unified world super middleweight titles against the 37-year-old from Omaha, Nebraska in Las Vegas this September.

‘Bud’ is faced with the monumental task of moving up two whole weight divisions to 168lbs, with many fans and pundits remaining sceptical about the four-division champion’s chances of defying the odds and beating Canelo.

One fighter who knows what it takes to beat the best is retired five weight world champion Mayweather, who actually faced the Mexican icon back in 2013, defeating him to capture the WBC light middleweight title.

In an interview with Fight Hype, Mayweather did not hold back when discussing his former opponent, claiming his victory over the 34-year-old was ‘easy’.

“You can take a guy like Canelo. I’ll tell the truth about Canelo. The mo**erf**ker was easy. A cakewalk, easy. You’re all praising this dude. He was nothing. I was almost 40 and I cooked this dude, easy.”

The 48-year-old from Grand Rapids, Michigan has also given an honest assessment of his countryman ‘Bud’, who he rates as the best active fighter on the planet.

“As of right now, I’d put Terence Crawford as number one [pound for pound].”

The intriguing battle between Crawford and Canelo has got the boxing world talking, with many left wondering who will be the one to prevail when they lock horns in approximately six months. Canelo is set to face IBF super middleweight champion William Scull, as he bids to become a two-time undisputed champion at 168lbs, which would raise the stakes of his bout against ‘Bud’ even higher.
