Floyd Mayweather Didn’t Hesitate When Asked Who His Toughest Opponent Was: “He Was Unbelievable”

Floyd Mayweather fought some of the pound-for-pound best during his legendary career.

He retired with a perfect record of 50-0, and was a five-weight world champion from super-featherweight to super-welterweight.

Fighters such as Manny Pacquiao, Canelo Alvarez, Oscar De La Hoya, Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto, Juan Manuel Marquez, Ricky Hatton and Jose Luis Castillo all tried to defeat Mayweather, but he overcome them all and hung up the gloves undefeated.

Mayweather has now named the fighter that he deemed to be his toughest opponent, and surprisingly it wasn’t any of the names listed above.

Instead it was a fighter that he took on back in October 2000, in his first fight up at lightweight in a non-title contest. The man in question was Emanuel Augustus, as Mayweather told Fighthub just why he was so difficult to face.

“Emmanuel Augustus was my toughest opponent. His record didn’t show his skillset but this guy was unbelievable.”

Augustus had a record of 22 wins, 16 defeats and 4 draws heading into the fight with Mayweather, with many observers believing the result would be a foregone conclusion.

His extreme toughness was on show throughout the bout though, with the fight only coming to an end in the ninth round when his cornerman climbed through the ropes and forced the referee to stop the bout.

Augustus ended his career with 38 wins, 34 defeats and 6 draws, but was only stopped 5 times in those 78 fights.

Along with naming his toughest ever opponent, Mayweather has also recently named his top five fighters of all time.
