Jake Paul continues to make waves in the sport of boxing and has become one of its most discussed figures following a controversial bout with Mike Tyson last year. Floyd Mayweather, who co-starred in an exhibition with his brother Logan, has weighed in on the 28-year-old’s skill and impact.
After making his name in the sport largely against former UFC fighters, Paul came up short in his first true boxing test against Tommy Fury. He bounced back with four wins before facing 58-year-old Mike Tyson, who had to postpone the initial fight date due to serious health concerns.
Though main event – a clear Paul points win after eight rounds – was underwhelming, the event broke viewership records and was trending worldwide.
Speaking on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Mayweather said that showing the fight on Netflix, included in the standard subscription, isn’t comparable to a typical boxing pay-per-view card.
“Basically, when you’re watching boxing for free, you can have hundreds of millions of views. But when you’re watching Floyd Mayweather, you have to pay. I did pay-per-view numbers. Check the record.”
On the prospect of a fight with the YouTuber-turned-boxer, 50-0 Mayweather said it would be ‘too easy.’
“Easy. Too easy. At 48, too easy.”
Some say Mayweather kickstarted this crossover scene when he faced MMA superstar Conor McGregor in the ring back in 2017. He has since retired professionally but continues to star in exhibitions across the globe.
It is currently unlikely he would return to the pro ranks for a Paul fight, even despite the incredible money that would be on offer. If he did, Paul – who responded quickly – also believes it would be an easy fight due to the 48-year-old’s past exhibition with YouTube star Deji.
“You bum. Deji gave you a black eye in an event that had 4,000 people in it. Deji hahahah. I would knock you out in 2 rounds and you can’t sniff Mike Tyson’s toe.”
