Floyd Mayweather and Mike Tyson have agreed to face each other next year in one of the most bizarre matchups ever in the sport.
Mayweather, who campaigned at a career heaviest of 154lbs, has not fought as a professional since August 2017 when he faced MMA legend Conor McGregor in their monumental crossover bout, defeating the Irishman via tenth round stoppage at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
As for Tyson, the 59-year-old former undisputed heavyweight champion made a sensational return to the ring after a 20-year hiatus last November, facing Youtuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul at the AT&T Stadium in Texas.
With further news on their exhibition bout set to drop in the coming weeks, Mayweather once revealed in a resurfaced interview with Fox Sports that he ‘commends’ his fellow countryman for the influence that he has had on him during his own career.
“Well I commend Tyson because he’s one of the guys that paved the way for me to be where I’m at you know, he’s a legendary champion and the only thing I have to say about Mike Tyson is everyone is always trying to judge Mike Tyson. He lived his life the way he wanted to live his life, no one can say what they would have done if they were in his shoes.”
With the stage set for an intriguing yet controversial exhibition bout between ‘Money’ Mayweather and Tyson, excitement is beginning to build for this clash of two of the biggest names in the history of boxing.
