A fantasy showdown between Floyd Mayweather and Sugar Ray Leonard has captured the imagination of many boxing fans.
The retired American superstars both had distinguished professional careers, winning a combined eighteen world championships between them.
Leonard was a member of the ‘Four Kings’ alongside Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns and Marvelous Marvin Hagler. The majority of his outstanding success came during the 1980s, defeating all three of the aforementioned fighters throughout this decade.
Mayweather retired from boxing in 2017 having remained unbeaten for the duration of his career. He defeated all 50 of his professional opponents, including the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Canelo Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya, as well as winning world titles across five weight classes.
One man who has weighed in on a fantasy clash between Mayweather and Leonard is Floyd Mayweather Sr, who was actually beaten by ‘Sugar Ray’ when they fought back in 1978.
Speaking on a YouTube interview, Mayweather Sr was asked how he believes his son would have fared against ‘Sugar Ray’ had they ever fought each other.
“Well I’m gonna be honest with you. I’m telling you the honest truth, Floyd would have whooped his a**, because I would have whooped his a** because I fought him with ten rounds and when they stopped the fight, hey, I was still right there ready for more, me and him had this talk already about us fighting.”
Mayweather Jr is often regarded as being the greatest fighter of all time, although a number of fans and analysts have made the same claim about Leonard.
One thing for certain is that both fighters achieved great things throughout their respective careers, proving themselves undeniably two of the very best to have ever laced up the gloves.
