A super-middleweight clash between Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez and David Benavidez is perhaps the one fight boxing fans are desperate to see above all others.
Benavidez has been calling for his rival to face him for years but, even though he was the WBC mandatory challenger, Canelo has dismissed the bout claiming the only thing his fellow Mexican brings to the table is an extra 25lbs come fight night.
Canelo has put a $200m bounty on the fight, seemingly pricing himself out of the contest that he recently admitted would be a ‘risk’.
“Obviously, he is a risk. He is a great fighter, and plus, he brings to the ring on fight night 25 pounds more than me. I can beat that guy tomorrow.”
One man who agrees with the public that Canelo is ‘ducking’ the ‘Mexican Monster’, is former opponent Floyd Mayweather.
Mayweather handed the the 33-year-old his first ever career defeat back in 2013 when he controlled the action and won a decision on the scorecards.
Speaking to Fighter IQ about the match-up Mayweather gave his honest opinion on the situation.
“If it was up to me, like, we keep on saying we want to see Benavidez. Canelo is a hell of a fighter, but in my personal opinion is that he’s ducking Benavidez and that’s just my personal opinion and I’m allowed to speak my mind, that’s just what it is. We want to see Benavidez – let’s make it happen!”
Benavidez grew tired of waiting for his shot at the 168lb belts and has decided to stay at light-heavyweight to face the winner of the undisputed clash between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol in October.
