George Foreman Names Unlikely Heavyweight As Man With The Best Chin: “I Hit Him So Much”

George Foreman is widely regarded as one of the biggest punchers in the history of the heavyweight division.

‘Big George’ had 81 fights during his illustrious professional career, winning 76 of them, with 68 of those victories coming by knockout, displaying just how hard he did hit.

That power saw him become a two-time world heavyweight champion with stoppage victories over the likes of Joe Frazier, Ken Norton and Michael Moorer, the latter of which made Foreman the oldest heavyweight champion in history, a record that still stands to this day.

He also shared the ring with fellow legends like Muhammad Ali and Evander Holyfield, but neither of them came to mind when Foreman was discussing who had the best chin, as he once gave an unlikely answer to Ring Magazine.

“George “Scrap Iron” Johnson. I hit him so often that I damaged my hands in that fight. He had taken “Smokin” Joe Frazier the distance and had the best chin I’d ever come across.

“They stopped the fight but I couldn’t get him out of there cleanly. I still haven’t knocked him out (laughs).”

Foreman was 21-years-old when he met Johnson back in May 1970, claiming a seventh round stoppage victory to extend his unbeaten record to 20-0.

As ‘Big George’ mentioned, Johnson managed to go the full 10-round distance with Joe Frazier when they fought in May 1967, while he also took on other big names like Sonny Liston and Ron Lyle. He ended his career with a record of 22 wins, 27 defeats and 5 draws.
