Canelo Alvarez is being targeted for a potential rematch against a former rival.
The 34-year-old from Guadalajara, Mexico is almost 70 fights in to what has been an exceptional professional career, which has saw him win world titles across four weight classes including the undisputed super-middleweight championship, which he currently holds.
Canelo returned to the ring against former IBF super-middleweight champion William Scull in Riyadh on May 3, defeating the Cuban via unanimous decision to achieve undisputed status at 168lbs for the second time, having beaten Caleb Plant back in 2021 to become the first undisputed champion of the ‘four belt era.’
In a shock claim made by Plant, the 32-year-old from Tennessee has staked his claim for a rematch against the Mexican icon after being handed the first defeat of his career by Canelo four years ago.
Speaking to Sean Zittel, ‘Sweet Hands’ was asked if he believes he could defeat Canelo in a rematch, should he be given another opportunity to face the 34-year-old in the near future.
“Yeah, I believe so. As soon as we fought, the next day I’m like ‘Man if we fight again I’m gonna beat him’, you know that’s just how I feel you know, a few minor adjustments and get the job done.”
Plant will return to the ring himself on May 31 against Jose Armando Resendiz at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas. The 32-year-old is then expected to go on and face Jermall Charlo later this year, with Charlo set to make his long-awaited return to the sport against Thomas LaManna on the same card.
