Moses Itauma blasted Dillian Whyte out in one round in what was supposed to be the toughest test of his career so far.
The 20-year-old prodigy took just under two minutes to put Whyte away, who had looked in his best shape for years at the weigh in though walked to the ring relatively subdued.
Though nothing will be taken away from Itauma and his clinical performance, it was clear that Whyte is a long way from his prime days. Rumours also began to surface hours before the fight that the former WBC World Title challenger had a leg injury.
Former Flyweight World Champion Sunny Edwards took to social media to reveal that he had received a call saying as much.
“Got a call today to say Whyte’s leg f***ed and it’s going early. This ring walk ain’t convincing me otherwise either.”
All will become clear in the days and weeks to follow. Whyte left the ring before speaking to those in attendance in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, but will likely release a statement soon.
As for Itauma, where he goes next depends on how much his team are willing to let him off the leash. Many are backing Filip Hrgovic, who beat David Adeleye on the undercard, to be the next challenge as a durable heavyweight who may take the young Brit rounds.
Riyadh Season’s Turki Alalshikh has made no secret that he would like Itauma to challenge undisputed king Oleksandr Usyk.
