Not too many people are convinced that Tyson Fury is fully retired, including one former two-time heavyweight world champion.
The announcement came just weeks after he had once again failed to solve the puzzle that is Ukrainian southpaw and heavyweight ruler Oleksandr Usyk, who Fury first fought in May for the undisputed championship and then in December for their rematch.
Many felt that the second loss left him with only one place to go – into a super fight with British rival Anthony Joshua, who has also twice lost to Usyk, as well as more recently to Daniel Dubois by fifth-round stoppage. That run left him, too, without a world title, so it seemed a natural next step for both men to make in 2025.
Speaking to FightHype, Hasim Rahman – who defeated Lennox Lewis for the heavyweight title in 2001 and would become champion again five years later – had his say on the retirement.
“I think what he meant to say was he’s tired, not retired, tired. He’d been in with Deontay Wilder taking them big old shots, then he got dropped by Ngannou, then he got dropped by Usyk, he’s tired.
“That’s what he meant to say. He’s not going to retire without filling up Wembley Arena without fighting Anthony Joshua. He’s not gonna do that, because it just makes too much money.”
Many will hope that Rahman, who retired for good in 2014 after twenty years in the game, is correct and that Fury will have one last dance with Joshua.
