Ryan Garcia has been urged to retire by a former world heavyweight champion.

The 26-year-old from California – who had been out of the ring since last April due a doping suspension – made his return against Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero on May 2, but things didn’t go to plan.

‘Rolly’ floored Garcia in the second round of their bout before being declared the winner via unanimous decision at the iconic Times Square in New York City. ‘King Ry’ looked out of his depth and without answers against Romero, who put on a disciplined performance to claim the WBA Regular Welterweight Title.

In light of this underwhelming performance from Garcia, former WBO Heavyweight World Champion Shannon Briggs has sent a stern message to the 26-year-old.

Speaking to FightHype, Briggs – who scored the most first round knockouts in heavyweight history – urged Garcia to hang up the gloves and walk away from boxing, branding him the ‘worst fighter’ in the history of the sport before criticising the fight card as a whole.

“What’s his name, Garcia? Retire. Retire. Worst fighter ever. Garcia, the worst fighter in boxing history. He shagged everybody with a jab and a check hook. He got good fundamentals … but he ain’t no fighter. All that drama s**t, all that racist s**t, and then to come back and fight like that? You lost to Rolly?

“Boxing is crazy right now. If those are the superstars, then what? I was right there ringside for all the fights and I was like ‘damn, horrible.'”

Garcia had been on course to face two-weight world champion Devin Haney in a rematch later this year, although the fight has lost its hype massively given this latest result.

Haney also made his return to the ring on May 2 as he outpointed former unified super-lightweight champion Jose Ramirez over twelve rounds fans found frustrating to watch.
