Former Super-Middleweight Champion Says He Has ‘No Problem’ Making Comeback To ‘Destroy’ Canelo

Canelo Alvarez has ruled the super-middleweight division for nearly five years.

Alvarez became undisputed at 168lbs in 2021 after impressive wins over the likes of Caleb Plant, Billy Joe Saunders and Callum Smith.

He has since had the IBF belt taken from him after being unable to face his mandatory, but has remained the king of the division thanks to wins over Edgar Berlanga, Jaime Munguia, Jermell Charlo, John Ryder and long-term rival Gennady Golovkin over the last two years.

Despite Canelo’s success, former super-middleweight world champion James Toney says he hasn’t been impressed by the Mexican superstar.

Toney is a three-weight world champion who held the IBF belt at 168lbs from 1993 to 1994, before losing his title and his undefeated record to Roy Jones Jr.

He hasn’t fought since 2017 and is now 56-years-old, but has told MillCity Boxing that he would come out of retirement to ‘destroy’ Canelo.

“We put too much emphasis on Canelo. If you look at it, he’s fought all these guys who are lighter than him, or they are past their prime and all of that, you can’t compare this mother****er to me, dog.

I fought the best fighters in their prime. I don’t even want to talk about the mother****er, because he p***es me off.

I could always come out of retirement and whoop his a** right now, I’d f**k him up, for real, I haven’t got a problem doing that!

I’d beat Canelo right now. He can be knocked out, he’s not all that. He’s no James Toney. He’s not in my league, he can’t carry my bags. Stop comparing him to me because there is no match, I would destroy him.”

Toney isn’t the only man to call out Alvarez, after a number one ranked fighter vowed to knock him out.
