Former World Champion Vows To Win Back The Title At Age 37: “I’ll Conquer Everest”

A former unified world welterweight champion has vowed to reclaim world honours this year.

It’s been a little under one year since Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman made his highly-anticipated comeback to the sport, stopping Australia’s Brock Jarvis in the 3rd round of their clash at the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney.

The 37-year-old from Florida is now on the verge of his next outing and has set his sights on capturing world honours yet again, having previously held the unified WBC and WBA world titles at 147lbs.

Thurman was originally pencilled in to clash with WBC super-welterweight champion Sebastian Fundora in Las Vegas back in October but the bout was cancelled after ‘The Towering Inferno’ suffered a hand injury.

Speaking in a press conference when the bout was originally scheduled, Thurman claimed he would ‘conquer Mount Everest’ and defeat his 6 ft 5.5 in countryman in impressive fashion.

“This is what the sport is all about. You put Thurman’s name next to anybody and I guarantee you it’s gonna be a fight you won’t wanna miss. I’m about to conquer Mount Everest himself. They call him ‘The Towering Inferno’, but I’ve been in the fire. This is what I live for right here. This is the top of the sport.”

It has now been revealed that Fundora has fully recovered from his injury and his showdown with Thurman is set to be rescheduled, as reported by Mike Coppinger recently.

“I’m told that they’re looking at rescheduling that fight for the first quarter of 2026. I think that’s a great fight, I think people are sleeping on Thurman. He’s one of the best fighters in the last 10, 15 years and I think at 154lbs he’s going to be a hell of a lot for Fundora.”

Champion Fundora was last in action on July 19 when he stopped Tim Tszyu in the 7th round of their rematch at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, making the second defence of his WBC super-welterweight crown in the process.
