A former super-welterweight world champion has made an important decision regarding his future as a professional.
After suffering the third defeat of his career to WBC super-welterweight champion Sebastian Fundora back in July, Australia’s Tim Tszyu had been faced with deciding whether to fight on or walk away from the sport that he has given so much to.
The 30-year-old from Sydney had a very positive start to his tenure, remaining unbeaten in his first 24 bouts as well as becoming the WBO super-welterweight champion which he defended on one occasion against Brian Mendoza just shy of two years ago.
Tsyzu faced Fundora for the second time on July 19, just over one year on from their first encounter which saw ‘The Towering Inferno’ defeat the Australian via split decision at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The rematch got off to a torrid start for Tsyzu, who was dropped in the first round before a cut opened above his eye in the second. Fundora’s good spells outweighed that of Tszyu, and before the eighth round the challenger opted to retire from the fight.
With speculation growing on what could be next for the 30-year-old, and many fans believing the nature of the loss marked the end of his campaign, ‘The Soul Taker’ recently confirmed on social media that he intends to fight on.
“Since my last fight, I’ve had time to reflect and I can feel that fire still burning inside me. To reach the next level, I’ve decided to restructure my team and bring in some new faces to support me on this next chapter. The best is yet to come.”
Whilst his return to the ring is yet to be confirmed, Tszyu could make his comeback during the early stages of 2026, as he sets his sights on capturing world honours at super-welterweight once again.
