A fight between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and David Benavidez is one of the most called for in boxing right now.
There has been plenty of back and forth between these two super-middleweight stars, though as of yet nothing has materialised.
A contest seemed close earlier in the year but Canelo instead took a defence of his undisputed titles against fellow Mexican Jamie Munguia. He won on points in fairly straightforward fashion while former two-time champion Benavidez moved up to light-heavyweight and cruised to a unanimous decision win over Oleksandr Gvozdyk, despite having suffered a cut to his face and torn tendon in his right hand before the fight.
He now has to choose whether he should come back down to pursue Canelo or exercise his right to a title shot against the winner of the undisputed light heavyweight fight between Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev later in the year.
As well as having fought Benavidez, former champion Gvozdyk has also sparred Canelo and speaking to K.O. Artists Sports, he revealed who is the hardest hitter between them.
“Well, we sparred seven years ago but I would say Canelo.”
Another man targeting a fight with Canelo is two-weight undisputed champion Terence Crawford. Though the weight difference between the two men may prove too much to bridge, that didn’t stop trainer-turned pundit Teddy Atlas from picking the much smaller man to win should the fight ever happen.
