Former Super-Middleweight Champion Says Canelo ‘Couldn’t Lace His Boots’: “I’d End Him”

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, current super-middleweight undisputed champion, has never been beaten at the weight or even looked in danger of losing his titles.

Canelo’s only two losses came when he stepped up to light-heavyweight and got outclassed by Dmitry Bivol and when he faced Floyd Mayweather over ten years ago at a 152lb catchweight below the super-welterweight limit.

Canelo has reigned supreme at 168lbs since 2020 when he defeated Callum Smith for the WBA, WBC and Ring Magazine titles.

Although he has beaten all challengers, one former champion believes it’s disrespectful to even be compared to the Mexican.

In an interview with Pro Boxing Fans, Hall of Fame fighter and former three-weight world champion, James Toney, says he would ‘end’ Canelo.

“Canelo can’t even lace my boots. He’s an alright fighter for starting at 147lbs, he was good then, but you can’t compare him to James Toney at 160lbs.

I would end him. He isn’t even in my league. It’s a disgrace to me for people to even compare me to Canelo, come on man!”

Toney has also been vocal on the fact that Canelo has yet to face his WBC mandatory challenger, David Benavidez. ‘Lights Out’ believes the 27-year-old would steamroll his way to victory and put Canelo ‘to sleep’.

For now Benavidez has given up waiting for his shot and, like his rival before, will step up to light-heavyweight in search of gold. He faces Oleksandr Gvozdyk on his 175lb debut but will be eyeing the winner of Artur Beterbiev-Dmitry Bivol which takes place on October 12.
