Former World Champion Tells Canelo He ‘Can’t Fight Anymore’

A former world champion has urged Mexican icon Canelo Alvarez to announce his retirement from boxing.

Canelo has been out of action since he suffered the third defeat of his professional career to pound-for-pound great Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford back in September.

The 35-year-old from Guadalajara underwent successful surgery on an elbow injury and recently announced that he will return in September. That, in the eyes of some, is not the correct move.

Speaking to DAZN Boxing, former WBC super welterweight champion Sergio Mora said he believes that that Canelo ‘cannot fight anymore’ and strongly suggested the Mexican icon should finally walk away from boxing.

“But at this point, Canelo is an old 35-years-old. 68 professional fights, he has been boxing since he was 15-years-old. He can’t fight anymore, so we’re not gonna see the pound-for-pound great that Canelo was. The upper body movement, the setting up the power. We’re not even seeing knockouts anymore from Canelo because that’s what happens when you start regressing as a fighter. When your legs can’t hold you up, you start thinking about the later rounds. You start thinking about crossing the finish line. You start thinking about your health.”

Canelo is yet to announce his opponent for his return, though boxing powerbroker Turki Alalshikh has said it will be a ‘surprise’ and a ‘world title fight.’ The belts in the super-middleweight ranks have scattered since Crawford’s own retirement, with fights for the vacant titles ordered.
