A former long-reigning heavyweight champion is gearing up for his return to the ring.
Boxing’s heavyweight division is set for a changing of the guard as the likes of Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk are just fights away from retirement. Tyson Fury has already announced he has bowed out, clearing the path for the likes of Daniel Dubois to take the take the reins.
Known as ‘The Bronze Bomber’, Deontay Wilder is not yet ready to call it a day and has announced his comeback after suffering back-to-back defeats to Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang respectively.
The 39-year-old from Tuscaloosa, Alabama was blasted out by ‘Big Bang’ Zhang in the fifth round of their bout in Riyadh last June, leading to many fans and pundits calling for the American to finally hang up the gloves.
Speaking to 78SPORTSTV, the hard-hitting heavyvweight backed himself to bounce back from the setbacks he has suffered over the last 18-months, claiming he still has plenty to offer to the sport despite so many believing otherwise.
“My grandma told me years ago I was anointed by God and she didn’t lie. Here I am, the mission is the same, I gotta get these titles man, I gotta do what I gotta do, to feel that greatness, to show the world how great I am, like they know I am. It continues, and I’m looking forward to it. I feels good to be a veteran.”
‘The Bronze Bomber’ is set to face fellow American heavyweight Tyrrell Herndon on June 27 at the Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kansas, in what will be the 39-year-old’s first ring appearance since that devastating loss to Zhang on the undercard of the ‘Queensberry v Matchroom 5v5’ show last summer.
Should he come through as expected, his team have expressed interest in making a long-awaited heavyweight clash with fellow former champion Anthony Joshua.
