A former long-reigning world heavyweight champion is just weeks away from making his return to the sport.
It has been almost one year since former WBC world heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder was knocked out in brutal fashion by Zhilei ‘Big Bang’ Zhang in Riyadh, but the 39-year-old is now set to to lace the gloves up once again.
‘The Bronze Bomber’, who has suffered four defeats in his last five outings, will face countryman Tyrrell Herndon in a non-title showdown at the Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kansas on Saturday June 27.
It had been speculated that Wilder could call time on his professional career following that fifth round knockout defeat he suffered to Zhang last June, but the 39-year-old has reiterated his desire to win a version of the heavyweight championship once again.
In an interview with 78SPORTS TV, Wilder admitted he is ‘looking forward’ to making a comeback to the sport, despite many fans and analysts writing the 39-year-old off after his recent form.
“Here I am, the mission is the same, I gotta get these titles man, I gotta do what I gotta do, to feel that greatness, to show the world how great I am, like they know I am. It continues, and I’m looking forward to it. I feels good to be a veteran.”
Wilder could go on to face either Jarrell ‘Big Baby’ Miller or Anthony Joshua in the future, both of which currently stood at a crossroads in their respective careers, much like ‘The Bronze Bomber’.
