A 54-year-old heavyweight has promised he is set to make his long-awaited ring return soon.
Heavyweights, more than any other division, tend to be able to fight to an older age than many others, largely due to the fact that they do not have to put their bodies through the often unhealthy rigours of making weight.
Right now, the best in the division, Oleksandr Usyk, is 39, with Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua also approaching 40, and Derek Chisora, Deontay Wilder and Zhilei Zhang already past that milestone.
However, one former world champion is more than a decade older than that but is still intent on getting back in the ring despite not having fought since May 2016.
Speaking to Seconds Out, American Shannon Briggs was asked if his long-discussed fight with Rampage Jackson is still to go ahead.
“It’s looking good, I just got a text and they wanna make the fight happen. Hopefully, we’ll have a definitive date in a couple of days.”
He was then asked how the fight, which has been mooted for more than two years now, will go down.
“He going to sleep, probably the first round, more than likely the first round. Actually, the first round. He’s funny, I like the guy a lot, but I gotta think, do I wanna torture him and take him a couple of rounds or do I wanna be his friend and take him out of his misery fast.”
Rampage Jackson is an American former mixed martial artist and UFC light heavyweight Champion who is himself 47 and last competed in MMA back in December 2019.
